School psychologist
The aim of the school psychologist’s work is to promote the well-being of the entire school community, strengthen the mental well-being of young people and offer them help with studying. Work at upper secondary schools is also preventative work, for example, visiting student counselling classes. The work of the school psychologist involves providing pupils with comprehensive support and influencing self-esteem, motivation, mental difficulties and social coping. The psychologist’s duties also include investigating pupils’ learning difficulties and planning support measures as well as assessing and treating pupils’ mental health problems and, if necessary, guiding them into further care. Care work focuses particularly on problems related to studying. The work is carried out in cooperation with students, their parents, teachers and, where appropriate, also with other partners. Students are generally directed to the school psychologist by a school nurse, school social worker or special education teacher.
